Intern Program

The Foreign Technical Nursing Intern Program is a program established in 1993 for the purpose of having foreign nursing interns come to Japan to learn and master skills and knowledge and spread what they learn to developing countries. This program intends to contribute internationally by training interns who can help in the development of their home countries.

With the addition by the Ministry of Labour, Health and Welfare on November 1st, 2017 of nursing as one of the vocations for which interns can be accepted, the Shin Nihon International Human Resources Development Cooperative began accepting foreign nurses.
Prior to including nursing in the intern program, an exploratory team consisting of the Ministry of Labour, Health and Welfare and other related government agencies was created to decide on necessary knowledge, skills, and a testing program.

We at JIH promote acceptance of foreign technical nursing interns to care welfare offices.

  • Can accept a wider variety of vocations (nursing, etc.)

About technical intern categories

  • Although technical interns must pass skill tests to pass from Category 1 to Categories 2 and 3 in their first year, each category is based on an employment contract, payment is made for work done starting with the first year, and technical interns are protected by Japanese labor laws.
  • Current resident statuses for technical interns are Technical Intern Category 1-Ro for the first year, Technical Intern Category 2-Ro for years 2 and 3 after passing the basic skills test, and Technical Intern Category 3-Ro for years 4 and 5 after passing the Level 3 skills test.
  • Intern periods are limited to either 3 or 5 years (only for excellent supervising organizations/excellent intern program organizers). The first month is spent in general training, after which interns are sent to their intern facility.
